Sculpture show at Harbourfront sure to impress

30 Sep

I just want to give everyone a head’s up about a show that’s on right now at Harbourfront Centre.

Fellow artists-in-residence Meredith Robb (jewellery) and Rose-Angeli Ringor (ceramics) collaborate in a show aptly called Hybrid.  The artists worked together to make pieces that use both their styles and mediums. They’ve created unique and beautiful sculptural piece made from brass hardward and porcelain.

Pop by and take a look. There’s always a ton going on at Harbourfront. (Perhaps you are already coming by for Octoberdogfest? Or there’s also the Dancemaker’s Double Bill on this weekend too!)

My head’s in the clouds (and on the beach…)

29 Sep

The beach at Point Pleasant Park. Halifax, Nova Scotia.

People always ask me: “What inspires you?”  There are just so many answers to this question! I am inspired everyday by something new — It could be a poster I see, a TV show I watch, a trip I take, a person riding on the subway (creepy? maybe a little), a magazine I thumb through. For this reason, I often have my head in the clouds (A typical Pisces trait apparently), thinking of the next thing that I can make!

As anyone who knows a little about astrology and zodiac signs know, Pisces (that’s me) are symbolized by two fish. Naturally, fish like water…lakes, oceans…and so do I.

My younger sister lives by the ocean in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Am I jealous? Maybe a little. (Thankfully I get to work right next to Lake Ontario everyday!) Sometimes I go visit her and we walk the beach at Point Pleasant Park, scouring the ground for shells, beach glass or any other trinkets we might find. This scavenging inspired a few pieces I’ve made, including a set of starfish cufflinks (below) and a seahorse pendant. I’m looking for ways to use the actual shells and sea glass we found in my pieces as well.

I am currently in the process of making a sea urchin ring that I am really excited about. Stay tuned for an update on how the making of that is going!

OMG. WTF. $%#. Bite your tongue and wear your words instead

29 Sep

This evening I was driving up Jarvis St. on my way home from Harbourfront. I was minding my own business, obeying the rules of the road, and waiting at a red light when suddenly out of nowhere: Crash.

Rear-ended.

OMG! WTF? What the #$@%$, @($&!^ were you thinking? I got out of my car to survey the damage (luckily, not much). I kept my cool. I didn’t raise my voice or lose my temper. But seeing the other drivers, I must admit, I wanted to.

Ever felt that way? Ever had one of those days at work that you just want to scream.

Enter: Profanity Series.

Profanity by Sarah Ana Designs

These pieces aren’t for the shy or faint of heart. They are for those people / employees / girlfriends / dads who may not have the gall to curse in public. But, well, they don’t mind wearing their words.

This started as a (gutsy) project for school. They were designed on the computer using ArtCam, which allowed me to get the symbols and shape milled out by a machine rather than me carving it. I then had the pieces cast in sterling silver, and filled the middles with ceramit – a low-temperature curing enamel. That was a challenge. Ceramit is really fussy and often bubbles (I now add a thinner to the ceramit, which has helped!)

These pieces are really fun to make. I’ve done cufflinks, pins (at left), rings, pendants and brooches.

The Profanity series makes me feel a little, well, naughty (This line is certainly not my mom’s favourite!)

Operation Colour: Variations on a Theme

28 Sep

Sarah Dobranowski 2001

In high school art class I was introduced to abstract expressionism and colour field painting. Mark Rothko, Hans Hoffman, Jack Bush, Bridget Riley, the list goes on! I loved the way these artists experimented with colour and shape. I loved the way my eyes were tricked, the way the paint seemed to leap off the canvas. I began to explore colour and shape in my own paintings. (See Picture Left)

Fast forward to jewellery school at George Brown College. I was still thinking of these artists and their experiments. I asked myself “How can I continue to experiment with colour and shape but using my new chosen medium?” That is when the work of Josef Albers came to mind. I remembered Albers’ body of work entitled “Homage to the Square.” In this series of paintings, Albers explored the relationship between geometry and colour. I decided that I would like to take this idea of a repeated shape and play with different colours to see how they may appear to change the design. And so my Op-Art line was born!

Weiner dogs? Nein — Dachshunds!

27 Sep

Nein- Daschund by Sarah Ana Designs

(Weiner dogs) Dachshunds make me squeal with excitement.

Seeing their long bodies running down the street just makes my heart jump.

A couple years ago, I decided to channel my love for all things weiner dog into my jewellery. Enter: Nein — Dachshunds…a line of bracelets, brooches and pendants dedicated to the furry friend.

(Note: The name of this line of jewellery came from a story my aunt told me. Her three little ones saw a weiner dog waddling down the street. They, like me, squealed with excitement. “It’s a weiner dog!” they shouted. The stern dogowner stopped dead in her tracks, stared them down and shouted, “Nein! Dachshunds!” and kept walking)

You can imagine my excitement when I heard that this coming weekend, Oct. 2, Octoberdogfest is coming to the Pawsway near Harbourfront Centre! It’s a celebration of German dog breeds, including my favourite – the six different kinds of dachshunds. I will definitely have to go check that out!

The two pics I’ve posted are 1) a dachshund cuff bracelet, which I cut and formed out of sterling silver (below) and 2) a brass and ceramit (a low temp. curing enamel) brooch (above).

Enjoy! Maybe see you Saturday at Octoberdogfest! (Squeal!)
